What
We Believe
The
universal Christian Church and the Lutheran Church teaches and responds
to the love of the Triune God: the Father,
creator of all that exists; Jesus Christ, the Son, who became human to
suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to life
again in the ultimate victory over death and Satan; and the Holy
Spirit, who creates faith through God's Word and Sacraments. The three
persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God.
Being Lutheran, our community accepts and teaches in
congruence with the
Bible-based teachings of
Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in
the 16th century.
The teaching of Luther and the reformers can be
summarized in four short phrases: Grace
alone, Faith alone, Scripture
alone, and Christ alone. We see ourselves as people who
continue on
not only the tradition of the early Lutherans, but as people who
continue on the tradition of the earliest Christian teachings which
came directly from the words of Jesus Christ.
Scripture alone
Scripture
is God's Word given to men. It was written down by all sorts of
people throughout the ages, but the Holy Spirit who is God stands
behind its words and messages.
Grace
alone
God
loves all the people of the world. He loves them even though they
are sinful. Being sinful means to rebel
against God and to not deserve His love. It means that you're not
even close to being good enough to deserve a relationship with
Him. God sent Jesus, His Son, to
love the unlovable and to begin a relationship with us that we could
never earn.
Faith
alone
Faith is given to those
who hear what God has to say about loving us and believe that He chose
to save us offers us eternal life. God creates faith in Christ
and gives people forgiveness
through Him. Faith is like trust. God gives us trust as the
way to be in community with Him. We can't force ourselves to
trust Him, so He began the trusting relationship by sending
Jesus.
Christ alone
We believe that Jesus Christ was sent to begin a relationship with
us. We don't think you can come to this relationship through
anyone or
anything else. We don't even think that you can somehow will
yourself into a relationship with God. We believe that Jesus came
to us and gave us the right to be called sons and daughters of His
Father.
